Computational Mechanics Expert

Sperry Drilling System is looking for an exceptional and innovative technical specialist with an advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering in the area of Computational Mechanics. This engineer must be proficient in applying scientific theories and engineering methods to develop or demonstrate new designs and concepts as well as use physical and computational simulation, analysis, and evaluation as inherent activities of development. Immediate interests will be in the area of non-linear FEA analysis, fatigue modeling for downhole tools and large deformation analysis.


Job Function/Responsibilities:

  • Be the subject matter expert in the area of computational mechanics and its application to determining structural integrity and durability of downhole tools
  • Perform high-level structural analysis to support technology development and product validation of Sperry’s L/MWD, Telemetry, and Drilling (Rotary Steerable and Mud Motor) equipment.
  • Deploy Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and related simulation capabilities in areas of structural mechanics, fatigue design, and material modeling, etc. to the global engineering organization.
  • Develop and implement new computational and experimental procedures for mitigating structural integrity risks through innovative mechanical design solutions
  • Develop new concepts towards the above goals and validate those with laboratory scale prototype testing. Understanding of analytical and experimental skills in structural mechanics and dynamics
  • Apply probabilistic design methods and optimization techniques to design analysis.
  • Develop and standardize simulation practices to predict structural performance of downhole drilling and LWD tools.


  • Demonstrated strong background in computational mechanics for down-hole drilling equipment applications.
  • Proficient in using ANSYS software (or equivalent) for structural analysis with expert knowledge for sub-modeling, contact analysis, and nonlinear material modeling. Experience in elastomer modeling is a plus.
  • Excellent knowledge in structural failure criteria, stress- and strain-based fatigue analysis, and cycle counting/life prediction.
  • Well-versed in numerical algorithm development using FORTRAN/C/C++/C#/Matlab.
  • Good training in micromechanics, elasticity/inelasticity/plasticity, fatigue design, and fracture mechanics, etc.
  • Familiar with material and component testing using MTS or Instron equipment. Hands-on experience in lab testing environment and proficiency in DAQ/sensor/instrumentation techniques.
  • Working knowledge of SolidWork or similar CAD software.


  • Ph.D. in Applied Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum 5-10 years direct working experience in development and validation of analysis methods to predict structural response of components and sub-systems.
  • Extensive experience with non-linear FEA analysis and development of fatigue analysis methods.
  • Experience with elastomer modeling is a plus.
  • Experience with analysis and design of downhole drilling tools, rotary steerable systems, motors and M/LWD tools.
